Why searching several second-hand marketplaces at once finds better deals

The second-hand market is fragmented. Someone selling a jacket puts it on Vinted, someone getting rid of a sofa tries a local classifieds site, someone with a collectable camera lens might choose eBay. Everyone lists where they're used to, and rarely everywhere. For buyers this means something simple: if you look at just one marketplace, you only see part of what's on offer.

In this article we look at why searching several marketplaces at once helps you find more, at better prices, how the search on Rovista works and, just as clearly, what it can't do.

Every marketplace has its own crowd

Second-hand platforms aren't interchangeable. Each has its strong categories, its habits and its own way of buying:

  • Vinted started with fashion and is still strong on clothing and small items that are easy to ship.
  • Subito, in Italy, is a general classifieds site, widely used for local deals and bulky items.
  • eBay mixes private and business sellers, auctions and fixed prices, and is a go-to for collectables and spare parts.
  • Wallapop is a person-to-person app focused on deals in your area.

The result is that the same model of bike, smartphone or pushchair can show up on different platforms, at different prices and in different condition. If you stop at the first app, you don't know whether you're looking at the best deal or just the nearest one. For a closer comparison of the platforms, read our guide on where to buy second-hand.

What you gain by searching everywhere at once

  • More listings to choose from. Better chances of finding exactly the size, colour or version you want.
  • Prices you can compare at a glance. Seeing listings side by side, you quickly understand what the normal price is, and which listings are overpriced or suspiciously cheap.
  • One-off items you don't miss. A rare item shows up once, on one site. If you weren't looking at that site, for you it never existed.
  • Less time. One search and one set of filters instead of four apps to open and set up again.

How Rovista works

One search, several marketplaces in parallel

Type what you're looking for once: we query all the marketplaces at the same time and put the results on a single page, with prices in your currency. Which marketplaces we search depends on the country you choose. Every listing links to the original site: that's where you contact the seller and buy, with the protection that platform offers.

Used only

Rovista is built for second-hand: we leave out new items and refurbished items sold by shops, as well as listings that describe themselves as new or still sealed. That way the results are about second-hand items sold by people, and you don't have to scroll through pages of shop products to find them.

Shared filters and marketplace filters

Some filters apply to all results: price range, words to exclude, matching mode and sorting, for example newest first or lowest price first. You can also choose which marketplaces to search.

Then there are the filters of each marketplace, which mirror those on the original sites: depending on the platform, you'll find location, maximum distance, listings with shipping only, condition, category or buying format. You use them when you need them, without losing the comparison with the other sites.

Favourites from every marketplace

Tap the heart on a listing to save it to your favourites, whatever the marketplace. It's the easiest way to set candidates aside and compare them calmly before messaging sellers.

Saved searches with history

When you're logged in, every search is saved in My searches with the filters you used. You can rerun it in one click and see the history of the listings it has found, newest first, for as long as they stay in our archive.

On the Free plan you search whenever you like, without automatic alerts. With the Base plan you can turn on alerts for up to 10 saved searches: we check them for you, as often as every 15 minutes, and message you by email, phone notification or Telegram only when new listings appear. You can try it free for 3 days the first time: the details are on the plans page.

The limits, plainly stated

One search saves time, but it doesn't work miracles. It's fair to know what to expect.

  • Results depend on each marketplace. We show what each site returns for your search: if a marketplace has few listings for that item, we show few too. And if a site isn't responding at that moment, its results may be missing: try again shortly.
  • You see the essential public data. Title, price, photo, location and link. For the full description, shipping costs and the seller's profile, open the original listing.
  • Listings change fast. An item may be sold or removed after it appeared in the results: the original site has the final word.
  • The "used only" filter relies on what the listing says. If a seller gets the condition wrong, a listing may slip through the filter, one way or the other.
  • Some sites are links only. Facebook Marketplace doesn't let other sites read its listings, and you need a Facebook account to see them: that's why we open your search, already filled in, on facebook.com, without ever asking for your login details. The same goes for Vestiaire Collective and Depop. On these sites we can't check for new listings automatically. You'll find the details on the Facebook Marketplace page.
  • The purchase happens on the marketplace. We're not a party to the sale: payment, shipping and buyer protection are those of the original platform. Always pay there, never outside it.

For transparency: we take part in eBay's affiliate programme on eBay links. If you buy, eBay may pay us a small commission; your price doesn't change.

How to make the most of it

  1. Start broad, then narrow down. Search for the item's name, see what comes up, then add a price range and words to exclude.
  2. Sort by price, but read the details. The cheapest isn't always the best value: check condition, shipping and location.
  3. Add candidates to your favourites. Compare them calmly before contacting sellers.
  4. Save the search and let the alert do the work. If you don't find the right one straight away, an alert messages you when it appears.

Want to give it a try? Search for an iPhone 13, for example, and see how many listings you find in one go. If you're interested in a specific marketplace, start from its page, like the one for Vinted or eBay.
